The Sastamala Regional Museum is a museum of cultural history displaying the development of the Sastamala region from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum is in a beautiful former stone cowshed of the Tyrvää parish, on the northern side of the Vammaskoski rapids. The exhibitions showcase the life of the area’s inhabitants, folk-style handicrafts, and traditional livelihoods. On display are artefacts related to hunting, fishing, and pottery, as well as beautifully carved cheese moulds, as the Sastamala region is known for its goat’s cheese.
The museum has extensive photograph and local history archives, which are open to researchers by appointment. The cultural centre Jaatsi, where artist Akseli Gallén-Kallela was born, is located near the museum. Jaatsi hosts changing exhibitions and the town’s own art collections.
